ABOUT yARN AS A SECOND LANGUAGE
Yarn as a Second Language was created for anyone who has ever picked up a crochet hook and thought, “Why does this feel like learning a whole new language?”
Because it is.
Crochet has its own vocabulary, techniques, rhythms, and rules—and like any language, it’s best learned with patience, encouragement, and the right tools. What began as 2 friends creating a YouTube channel dedicated to teaching crochet in a clear, approachable way has grown into a trusted community of makers learning together, stitch by stitch.
At the heart of Yarn as a Second Language is a deeply personal story.
I learned to crochet as a child from my late grandmother, Helena. She didn’t just teach me stitches—she taught me patience, persistence, and the quiet joy of creating something with your hands. Watching her crochet for hours, I saw both the beauty of the craft and the physical toll it could take. Her influence planted the seed for what would later become a passion for designing tools that honor the hands that use them.
YASL is now a premium, authority-driven crochet brand focused on wooden hooks that prioritize ergonomics, longevity, and thoughtful design. We are not trend-driven or mass-produced. Every product is purpose-built for makers who care deeply about how their tools feel, perform, and last over time.
Our mission is simple:
to make crochet more accessible, more comfortable, and more enjoyable for everyone.
Through years of teaching crochet online, one truth became clear—many crocheters struggle not because they lack skill, but because they’re working with tools that cause hand strain, fatigue, and discomfort. That realization led to the next chapter of YASL: creating ergonomic crochet hooks designed to support real hands, real learning, and long-term comfort.
Our products are shaped by:
-
Real crocheters
-
Real feedback
-
Real hands that deserve comfort
Yarn as a Second Language is about more than yarn and hooks. It’s about confidence, creativity, and community. It’s for beginners learning their first stitches, experienced crocheters refining their craft, and anyone who believes crochet should feel welcoming—not intimidating.
You don’t have to be fluent to start.
You just have to begin.
Welcome to Yarn as a Second Language.
